Surgery is Rare
Surgery is necessary for back pain less than 1% of the time. Most back or neck pain is what we call "mechanical" pain. One of the the great myths is that arthritis and disk syndromes are responsible for most people's pain. In fact, one third of all people without back pain have herniated disks. it is now frequently considered a coincidental finding. Most spinal disorders can be treated with simple conservative care involving manipulation, self-care, advice, and exercise.
